A shop's feed is a lantern left on in the alley

Feet slow down at a lit window. News this week says one thing: we're open.

4 min readmeok

Walking an unfamiliar alley at night, with a lit shop next to a dark one, which do you look at first? You don't know what's inside, but the lit one feels open. A feed is that lantern. Just knowing there's news this week is the sign that this shop is alive right now.

Why a lantern

A shop meets customers only while the door is open. But people search before you open and after you close. If your last news is old then, they think, “maybe it closed,” and move on.

It needn't be a big lantern. A small one that stays on is remembered longer than a big one lit once on opening day.

A signboard is hung once and stays. A lantern has to be lit every time. Sharing the lighting is our job.

Which lanterns to light

What happens in your shop every day is the post. You needn't wait for a special day.

  1. Today's display

Show what's out today: bread just baked, flowers just in.

  2. The owner's hands

The hands that make, the hands that tidy. When people show, the shop feels close.

  3. A regular's seat

A story about a favourite dish or item, and one permitted line from a customer.

  4. How to find us

The alley, the sign, parking, the way. What first-time visitors wonder most.

  5. Days off and hours

Only what's confirmed. A wrong time puts the lantern out.

  6. A frame of the season

What changes with the season: window light, a new seasonal dish.

Today's display

The first tray is on the shelf, still steaming. By ten the gaps start to show.

F February Florist

How to find us

Right at the end of the alley, next to the blue gate. If the buckets are out front, we're open.

B Buckwheat House

Day off

We're closed this Tuesday. The stove is back on Wednesday at eleven.

If you're thinking…

What shop owners say most.

“The shop alone is enough to handle”

That's why we write the month ahead. Choosing takes a few minutes a day.

“I'm not good at photos”

We use the photos you upload first. One taken in good window light is plenty.

The rhythm of lighting

Three a week is enough: this week's news on Monday, the display on Wednesday, weekend info on Saturday.

The days are an example. Leave out the days the shop is closed. This pace is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee of results.

The common mistake

The one we see most often.
